‘Pilates’ comes from the name of its founder, Joseph Pilates. Joseph was ill from an early age and devoted his life to finding ways to become healthier. After practicing gymnastics, yoga, kung fu, diving, boxing, rowing, circus and more, he put together the best movements from those exercises and developed them into Pilates movements.

During World War I, Joseph Pilates created 34 mat movements in prison which he called ‘Contrology’. These movements were developed into “Pilates” by his desciples.

Joseph also took part in rehabilitating the wounded from the war. He struggled to come up with ways to help them recover effeciently and effectively. He decided to hang a spring on the bed so that the wounded could exercise while lying in bed. This was the very first Pilates machine developed.

Pilates machines have since been improved multiple times to adjust intensity levels that are suitable for each individuals’ strength and joint range of motion. This also enabled hundreds of exercise movements to be performed. These machines are not only excellent in training people to prevent injuries and improve physical imbalance, but also highly recommended for professional athletes as fundamental human activities that are critical for sports can be strengthened.

While Yoga focuses on physical training for emotional control, wisdom, and purification of the body and mind, Pilates emphasizes the balanced development of the whole body based on human anatomy by restoring the balance between muscles and joints.
